Tattoo: dragon on her upper right thigh.

Personality:
Serious and somewhat antisocial, Jane prefers to be alone or with Rue. She holds her face in an impenetrable impassive or at most a polite smile, and sometimes unnerving calm; rarely does a genuine smile cross her face. Yet behind her tightly controlled exterior is an insatiable curiosity. Despite being born physically frail, she is determined to improve her condition. She enjoys reading to further her knowledge and observing people. Sometimes she shows a wry side to her as well.

History:
Born with a sickness that kept her more or less bedridden for the first few years of her life, Jane was homeschooled by her wealthy parents, who owned a popular bookstore. Due to her physical frailty, she spent most of her time reading, not discriminating between textbooks, novels or cereal boxes. Coupled with a nearly photographic memory, this incessant reading and supply of material gave her a breadth of knowledge not often available to children. Even when she was healthy enough to walk and play with other children, Jane seemed to prefer the company of the older generation if any company at all.

After her first trip around the city, she developed an interest in tea-making. She helped out whenever she could in the kitchen and memorized recipes that she would later try in her library-lab-room. She finally settled on the Rooibos redbush tea for its particular taste and—of course—health benefits. She practiced and focused on this special tea in secret, though she would occasionally study and try her hand at making other teas to see if she might gain insight from how they were made. Although not very prone to daydreaming, Jane picked up “thinking to” the herbs that made the tea or to the Gods who would one day judge her work.

Tea Ceremony:

The ceremony was attended by a small but comfortable gathering of her parents, grandparents, uncle, cousins, and a few family friends and held in their mansion’s tea house. Jane prepared her chosen tea in careful silence, focusing on remembering exactly how to prepare each ingredient and precisely how much of every ingredient to add. She did not have much doubt that her tea would be accepted: she had been meticulous in her measurements and was certain it would convey what she wanted it to. Her audience watched with an amused air, confident in the little girl.

At last the tea was poured into a cup and set in the center of the table. “God and Goddess, I humbly offer you this rooibos tea,” she articulated, quietly but unmistakably. Mist swirled about the cup and when it cleared, a small orange pouch filled with rooibos sat within it, waiting—for the only time in its existence—patiently. Without hesitation, Jane reached forward and summoned Rue for the first time.

Grinning from ear-to-ear, her Essence hugged her in greeting, radiating enthusiasm and happiness. Jane flinched. Irritation and indignation flooded through her—what exactly was this flightly, young, tree-hugger? How was such an Essence part of—had originated—from her? Jane had expected—maybe even hoped for—a mentor figure, someone old and wise—someone who would play chess with her every evening while telling her myths from far-off lands and explaining quantum physics to her! This was not what she had in mind. What. Had. She. Done. Wrong?! Meanwhile, Rue continued to greet everything around them, from the cup she had come from to the grass around their feet to the the clouds above them. Their audience was equally startled, but after a moment most of the group chuckled in merriment or amusement, intrigued by this strange turn of events.

Although initially wary and even annoyed at her talkative and bubbly Essence, Jane was never very strict and would let Rue out of her tea bag whenever Rue liked, and would sometimes summon her just to practice. Gradually though, she has accepted Rue as part of herself and admitted that there might be some kind of Rue’s eccentricity within her: A year later, she has come to terms that her rooms are no longer the quiet library they used to be. And however indifferent Jane may appear to be, she definitely appreciates having another set of eyes and ears out that return to tell her the most strange stories, as well as a mouth to talk and ask all her questions for her. Recently in good weather they’ve been camping out in the gardens, scrutinizing leaves—Rue’s named just about every leaf on the sapling they planted their first spring together, and sadly, Jane remembers each name.
